Week6-My reflection regarding AECT’S project in Authentic Learning

After reading Tapping into History Via Video: Enlisting the Legends and Legacies of our Field, I know the process of design R511 that I am learning. Thank Dr. Bonk for his diverse materials regarding this course. I am enjoying the learning process; I also understood some theories better and easier because these materials furtherly analyzed and explained these theories from multiple angles. In addition, in the article, I know the AECT Legends and Legacies Project, and I think that its ability to provide many rare video materials will be very helpful for learners, particularly newcomers. Hence, I am interested in this project.

Then I went to read The AECT History Makers Project and The AECT Legends and Legacies Project from reading materials of this week. After reading, I clearly know the background, design and development, exist outcomes, and the future plan. I noticed that the effect of captioning is not always perfect because it relied on voice recognition. As the opinion mentioned by Dr. Mayer, learners will learn better when showing text and sound at the same time. Hence, although the captioning is not necessarily accurate, to a certain extent, it can also help the viewer understand what the interviewer said. Particularly, it will be very helpful for newcomers and international learners that they possess limited English. The members of this project have been working on improving this project. In order to let the tools more convenient to be applied by learners, they will plan to add the recorded audio and video files, as well as print materials. And in order to expand the scope of materials, they will add the international interviews. All these sounds perfect. I believe that the project will provide learners more and more materials and help.

Hi Xiaojiao,

I enjoyed reading this reflection. What you brought up about using both visual and audio input reminded me of the growing emphasis on accessibility and the importance of considering different abilities and preferences. I completely agree with you that that would help international students, and honestly, I even reply on captions when watching anything in my first language, perhaps overdoing it.

One thing I thought it was funny was during the pandemic since we all started to wear masks, I also noticed how being able to see people's mouth while they talked helped me understand them better. That combination of our different senses means a lot in human communication.
